This chapter takes us from Thomas Jefferson into the early years of the 19th Century, when American society was highly mobile, dynamic, and inventive as we expanded rapidly into the new territories both north and south of the Ohio River. Much of this chapter will deal with the central issues of war and peace: Indeed, our first declared war breaks out against our original enemy, Great Britain, over disputes on the high seas and on the future of the territories to the west of our 13 original states, where Indian nations were resisting the inexorable tide of American settlers searching for opportunity. We'll also get a glimpse in what life was like for the "average American" (including, of course, slaves as well as wage workers, farmers as well as the growing community of industrial entrepreneurs) - and throughout it all, the increasing role of education as well as religion in public life. Enjoy! Due date: Thursday at midnight.
